Canal to PG... PG to Blockbuster... picked up a movie and ran home.  I love the rain... at first it took my breath away it was so cold, but after a while we got used to it.  A couple of people pulled over and asked if we needed a ride.  We said nah... we are doing this for fun.

Not bad.  Did it with the stroller and my two kids.  This is about the same time I did this race in last year but this year I did it with the stroller.  So an improvement for sure.

Bad news was that I was the second stroller.  My brother was number 1 stroller at 20:48... way faster than me.  I am sure quite a few runners were thinking... holy cow... a stroller.

For starters... I was pretty, ok... not just pretty, VERY, frustrated at the number of slow runners who started at the front.  I looked at the pack.... said I expect to be top 300 or so... which puts me ... about here.   It took about 40 seconds for me to even hit the start line (walking mind you).  I counted 36... but very slowly.  And then the first mile couldn't have broken 9:00 due to the weaving passing and luckily not swearing... (but I thought about it).

Well, I was hoping to find Kim out there somewhere and run with her.   Instead I ran with a very nice lady named Heidi from Orem. I ran with Heidi till the 10 mi marker and decided that I had a little more gas so I might as well burn it.  Hit mile marker 12 and struggled a little to hang on.  Hit the finish line sprinting so I backed off too much in mile 12.  Oh well.  I am really uncertain as to the time.  I am pretty sure it was under 1:45. Funny thing is that apparently my wife and I exchanged numbers.  so I am picking up my shirt and the lady says... womens medium eh???  Thinking to have caught me using someone else's number...  Which I had albeit rather innocently... (oops don't ban me next year) So I picked up a women's medium and then waited for my wife to cross.  Which she did at 2:04 ish.  Which is awesome for her!

All in all I had too much left in the tank.  I shoulda pushed the middle miles harder.  But seeing as this was just to prove to myself that I can pull off st george in 4 hrs... I am pretty sure I succeeded at that.

I should add that I was a total dork at the end of the race.  During my final sprint I saw two ladies way out ahead of me and decided to catch them... I crossed the finish line just barely ahead of them but the skinney sojourner dude made me hold up and let them pass me.  Which I objected to because I had passed them right at the line.  But the objections were retarded, the time was the same, and in the end who really cares?

Updated the official time according to the online results.

Alright kobyhud, If I'd have known there was someone out there that I didn't know that was looking for me I might have been a bit nervous. J/K You should have told me in advance that you would be about the same as me and I could have looked for you. However, I'm not quite sure how you missed the purple ponytail.

Great job to you and your wife. Is she a blogger too?

From Kelli on Sat, Aug 23, 2008 at 18:09:38

Great job and I am sure you will achieve your goal in St George.

I hear you on the beginning of the race. I wish people would get in line where they belong---markers would help! It was really difficult to get by people (although I SAW Kim fly past people just a few minutes into it, and the dirt side of the road!)

It is okay to be a dork, too, we all have our moments!

From kobyhud on Sun, Aug 24, 2008 at 12:16:09

She has visited the site. I think she doesn't want to commit to blogging her runs yet. I think she is afraid of blogging her runs because it probably won't be too long until we decide to have another kid which will ruin the consistency of her training.

As it is she had never run anything over a 5K until the freedom festival in provo, she decided to start running in April. We now have a nursing 8 month old baby girl. So I think she has made amazing improvement.

As for the stalker thing I shoulda posted something, I figured I would introduce myself in person. I didn't want to creep you out :).

This was a good race.  I was really glad to meet everyone and put lots of faces to names. I swear that Kim knows EVERYONE.

Harrumph... the results were posted and my name isn't even in there.  Some sort of error because once again I was dumb.  This time instead of switching my wife numbers I put my bib on backwards so the number wasn't showing.  I was pretty sure that got corrected at the finish line but I guess it wasn't.  I imagine I didn't even have a chance at winning something at the raffle =).

As for the race description itself.  Ran pretty much the whole thing with Kim.  She had thought she was going to run a slower race.  We started chatting and I guess the conversation was interesting enough that she decided to can the pacing and she stayed with me. The good news is I am pretty sure we negative splitted.  Which I am way excited about. I also learned that Chocolate gus are much better than berry flavors for me.  I am also confident I am going to beat my 4:00 st george goal. This was a good primer race... I liked hobble creek because it gave me an idea of the pounding I will get from all the downhill at st george.  I like this race because its smaller and has some hill in the middle.

Big hoorah for the Spanish Fork Running Club for putting on a good event.  There was plenty of fruit at the end.  For next year though... don't forget to have gu at the ready!

What a bummer that you aren't listed! I can't believe I didn't notice your number on backwards! That is a little bit funny that you are having number issues! I'll bet you have your number perfect at St. George! ha ha!

Thanks again for helping me get a really good feel-good race in! I felt so much better than Hobble Creek! I feel great today too!

I'll be checking in on your workouts in the next few weeks! Keep it going and you will be coming in well before the 4 hour mark!

From Tom on Sun, Sep 07, 2008 at 23:08:13

Hey Koby great job on the race, you are certainly on track to smash your goal for SGM. And thanks for pacing Kim to a great race for her and providing good chit-chat, encouragement and motivation throughout most of the race.

Bummer your results got messed up, hope maybe they can get that fixed.

I feel a ton better after this race than I did after hobble creek as well. I think the downhill does give you a pounding... though it is FAST. So long as you keep that purple ponytail thing going I should be able to find you at St. George. I am super excited and feeling good. Still have a 20 miler this weekend to do. But so far so good!

Well, it was a good race as far as my performance and my goals went.  The rain slowed me down, I ended up with a terrible cramp in my right foot (I think it was due to having wet shoes and feet for 26 miles.)  I bonked real hard at mile 22 after I had a very long pee break, I couldn't get my speed back after this point.  I would have almost certainly broken 3:35 if I hadn't over hydrated and ended up having to slow down for so long.

Overall this race met my expectations.

I was happy to meet Jodie she was super nice and she did a great job!  And to think she has four kids!

Nice job Koby, that's a great time. Way to hang tough after the PB at mile 22, I've only done that once that late in a marathon and then the legs pretty much stopped working after that.

From kobyhud on Sun, Oct 05, 2008 at 23:32:12

First off, Thanks for all of the encouragement. It means a lot. I am sure to do another one now. I am actually excited to do another one. That is a huge

As for Alicia, I was going to let her type up her summary but she probably won't :). We will get her on the blog yet.

Alicia ended up playing a similar game as Kim did. As in, stretch hobble... stretch hobble. She started the stretch hobble pretty early in the race... in the single digit miles... but the good news was that by mile 17 she didn't have to stretch hobble so much anymore. She way negative splitted because of this. She ended up at 4:48. I was expecting her about 4:30 if she didn't get too hung up by the knee. So the time was really good. She did say that it was really frustrating to play leap frog with the 4:30 pacer. She knew she was faster and she kept continually passing the same people because of the stretch stops.

In other great news... she is really happy about the marathon and wants to do another one.

My first run after my first marathon.  The muscles were just a little bit sore.  But my right foot is killing along the bottom outside edge.  This is a new one for me.   I am going to stretch it out for a while and see if I can get it to loosen up.  It was frustrating because other than the foot I felt pretty good.  I was thinking about running a 5k this weekend just to loosen up and have some fun.  I am not certain that is going to be such a great idea now.  I may also need to look at finding some different shoes.  I like the idea of trying some five fingers, but I am worried that they won't be that great on the canal where I do a lot of my running.

Hey Koby,

I have the very same hurt as you! I have felt great since the marathon, even my knee, except for the outside edge of my right foot! I actually went to the doc the other day for fear of a stress fracture. It's hard to see a stress fracture on an x-ray within the first few weeks but it didn't look like it was a SF. The doc said it is most likely tendonitis. Which also needs some rest for recovery. He suggested taking a few weeks off of running and do some biking or swimming or yoga. Also anti inflamitories and ice. After that if the pain is gone I can start in gently. If the pain returns when I get going again I am suppose to come back in for a follow up x-ray. Sorry, that was a long comment, but I thought I'd share my info.

How's Alicia feeling? I figure that having to rest my foot is a good way to have to rest my IT band as well. I hope she is feeling well. Good luck to both of you in your recovery. Keep me posted. I'm not checking the blog as regularly at the moment, but if you put a comment on my blog I am alerted through email.

4 miles with the stroller.  Felt really good for the entire run.  Got home and my toenail started to separate.  I was worried about that.  It has actually been quite a painful process.  I have been limping pretty much ever since.  I may try running again later this week just to see how bad that hurts.

Finally a nice run.  It wasn't too long... I can still feel weakness in my lower legs I continually am shifting my stride around to remove possible aches and pains.  but my upper legs feel great and my right foot is feeling good.  Now it is time to choose the next race to prepare for, and I should probably run a more official 5K and figure out what kind of time I can do.  I have a goal of sub 20 mins in a 5k.  I need to assess how far I am from that goal.

Sad I know that it has been so long.  Its been crazy down at work and I know that isn't an excuse.  Did a 5 miler.  Started feeling it in my knees by the end.  I think I am going to have to keep the mileage under 4 for a while and just go every day if not twice a day.

I guess these were probably fairly fast miles.  Left IT band still bugging me... really really bad pain after this run.  Hopefully this knee will calm down for the Turkey trot.

Little to no warm up...(keeping the knee happy) but did do some cool down.   Lungs were struggling a little bit, knee was bothering me.... legs were anemic, and I forgot to eat even a snack much less breakfast.  What can I say?  Not a terribly good run, but not terribly bad..  It was two minutes faster than last year so I can't complain.  If I had kept up my previous fitness level I feel like a 28 was possible.  Seems like I need to get back into a schedule again.  Ran into Sasha and Jeff and had a fun conversation.  I need to hook up with some other people for some training runs.

Easy out and back.  Started with a good hill climb and then just jogged the rest of the way back home.
